For many women, the period of menstruation is perceived as a monthly ordeal, which they can not avoid. Between insomnia, headaches, menstrual cramps or digestive disorders, we can not blame them! To better live this period, here are things to avoid!

Discover the 5 things you should not do during the rules:

1 – Skip the meals:
Skip meals, is strongly discouraged in normal times and is even more during periods of menstruation. In fact, normal bleeding leads with them a loss of iron, which becomes more important in case of heavy periods.

This loss of iron causes a deficiency in this mineral that can cause anemia, whose symptoms are manifested by fatigue, shortness of breath, and a pale complexion among others.

It is therefore important to eat well, during the rules, to overcome the shortcomings caused by this period. Promote natural foods rich in nutrients, especially iron, such as meats, seeds and legumes.

2 – Do not play sports:
Many women associate the menstruation period with a sedentary phase. They reduce their physical activity and stop the sport! Fault ! Playing sports during the rules is not inadvisable, on the contrary. Unless you have cramps that immobilize you and prevent you from doing the most basic tasks, exercising regularly is highly recommended.

Let’s remember that sport is excellent for health because it reduces the risk of diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and hypertension. But did you know that sports can also reduce menstrual disorders? Indeed, sport helps regulate the cycle and calm menstrual pain when they are not very strong!

3 – Having unprotected sex:
From a medical point of view, having sex during the menstrual period is not a contraindication. Indeed, the female genital tract does not experience any physiological change, during this period, which could prevent sexual acts.

But it must be kept in mind that the risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease is much higher during this period. Indeed, blood can promote contamination, if one of the partners carries infections. It is therefore important to protect yourself during sex, using a condom. Protection prevents the transmission of diseases, but also unwanted pregnancies.

And yes, making love during menstruation does not rule out pregnancy possibilities when one does not use contraception. In some women, a disturbed menstrual cycle can cause ovulation and end of periods to overlap!

4 – Consume junk food:
In addition to increasing the risk of obesity and other dangerous diseases, unhealthy diet can also cause digestive disorders such as bloating or diarrhea. And knowing that these two digestive problems are very common among women in menstruation eating unhealthy foods, could only accentuate them!

It is therefore recommended to ban processed, high-calorie and low-nutrient products and to focus on everything that is natural to replenish vitamins and minerals.

Women must also limit their salt intake during this period because it promotes water retention. Limited consumption of coffee and tea is also recommended, because these products may increase irritability, observed in some women during menstruation.

5 – Do not sleep:
Our body needs to sleep enough, to rest, especially during the periods when it knows different changes! However, many women are prone to episodes of insomnia during their period. According to statistics from the National Sleep Foundation in the United States, 23% of women reported having a restless sleep during the week before the rules, while 30% said they had the same problem during the period of menstruation.

The insomnia associated with the rules, can have different causes, in particular, the increase of the body temperature related to the menstrual cycle, the anxiety and the depression, the digestive disorders or the pains. This sleep disorder is also the result of a sharp drop in progesterone levels. The decrease of this hormone with soporific effects, can thus cause insomnia.

Thus, taking the necessary steps to enjoy a good night’s sleep, even when circumstances do not allow it, is essential. Put the odds on your side, avoiding the excitement of tea and coffee, prefer relaxing herbal teas and avoid heavy meals at night.
